The Mebo Mechanics

Back in the 90s when the internet was just taking off, before proper forums were established, GDSF had what was called a Message Board where those interested in GDSF could ask questions or leave messages. ("Will I neeed welllingtons if it rains?" sort of thing).

"Message Board Mechanics" quickly became MeBo Mechanics, and when GDSF discontinued the message board I started a dedicated forum using one of the free forums that proliferated in the early days of the Internet.  This is the mast head created for me by Katie (whose MeBo handle I am ashamed to have forgotten!)

Jen "Splitpin" front and centre.

My camera times and dates this as 20.35 on 30 August 2005 which Google tells me is Tuesday, the day after the August Bank Holiday.  This ties with the fact that at that time GDSF ran from the Wednesday after the Bank Holiday and we started arriving over the Bank Holiday to get our exhibits ready for the show.  When the show started Jen (who played "Splitpin" as one of Dr Busker's RATs) would be on stage with Dr Busker.

Friday afternoon in the RAT

These are the original tee shirts.  They got better.

Since we had only ever communicated by leaving short messages on the message board, it is little wonder most of us did not rcognise each other in the real world of exhibiting at GDSF.   After the second year I volunteered to get tee shirts printed, and we arranged to meet on the Friday of the show.

To be fair to the printers they did ask, "Are you sure you want the font this big?" to which (not knowing any better, I replied yes!  The tees did get better and more tasteful, honest!

Were you a MeBo?

If you know who this is, you probably were.

And if you don't know who it is, do you remember Private Benjamin's lady owner?

Dr Busker visits Clogs Mclay's caravan

The under restoration NOMAD

Our friend Nancy who for a time was also part owner of our 1952 Scammell Mountaineer owned a caravan of indeterminate age.  All that was known about it was that it was called a "Nomad" (which we assumed was the make or brand name).

If I ever knew, I have now forgotten why she was called Clogs but the Nomad was a favorite stop off on the way to the cider tent (and was just around the way from the place that sold large jugs of Pimms).  Here we see Dr Busker accompanied by various Mebos.
